Soil Porosity
To establish the overall length of a drain run required a soil porosity test may be necessary. The following procedure should be adopted.
Excavate a hole 300mm by 250mm deep below the proposed insert level of the land drain
Fill hole with water to a depth of 250mm and allow to drain away over night.
Refill to a depth of 250mm and note the time taken to drain away completely.
Repeat this exercise two more times and calculate the average time.
By reference to the table the length of drain run required for various capacity tanks may be established.

The above is based on 500mm trench width, 2.0m apart. For lengths above 100m it is acceptable to use 1.0m wide trenched and halve the length.
Effluent Dispersal
Where the water table and the nature of the soil allow satisfactory absorption, dispersal should be by means of a sub-surface irrigation system.
A looped system of rigid perforated or butted land drains as shown should be laid in trenches lined with gravel. Coiled plastic drainage pipe is not recommended.
To ensure even distribution it is important for the land drains to have a uniform gradient of no more than 1 in 200.
Siting
The following should be considered when siting the tank and dispersal system.
The site should preferably be a minimum of 15 metres from the nearest habitable dwelling.
The dispersal system should be a minimum of 10 metres from the nearest water course and at least 1 metre above the local water table.
Emptying vehicles should have access to within 30 metres of the tank.
A site which is subjected to traffic loading should be avoided.
Installation
In all cases the tank should be seated on a firm concrete base. For a dry well drained site, backfill should be 10mm rounded pea shingle or similar. If the site is wet with poorly draining soil then the tank should be backfilled with concrete, fill with water at the same time to avoid flotation.
Biotec Treatment Plants
Where discharge is to a ditch or water course or if above conditions for septic tank cannot be met (subject to Environment Agency approval) further treatment is essential. Details of the comprehensive range of Titan Biotec sewage treatment plant are available on request. |
